ABOUT uS
about the Canine cooperative

Laurie is a retired certified nurse-midwife who has always had a love for dogs. Little did she know, her nursing career was about to change trajectories when she took a travel assignment for a hospital. This assignment allowed her to travel with her dogs. The housing was a dog-friendly hotel stay with many other guests’ dogs as well. There was one main entrance and one elevator. On her first day at the hotel, one of her dogs started lunging and snapping on leash, showing signs of leash reactivity, toward other dogs coming and going from the hotel. It was incredibly embarrassing and stressful. This behavior escalated until she got help from a Karen Pryor Academy graduate dog trainer who specialized in positive reinforcement dog training. The training methods changed both Laurie and her dog’s quality of life.

After she completed her hospital assignment, Laurie had a new calling to pursue a career in dogs. Subsequently, Laurie became a Karen Pryor Academy graduate, completed master’s course work in aggressive dog behavior, as well as completed rigorous training to become a Service Dog Coach. The Service Dog Coach certification allows dog guardians to utilize their pet dogs as service dogs to help them with their disabilities. The service dog coaching merged Laurie’s nursing career and passion for dogs into one. Laurie’s goal is to create a deeply bonded guardian/dog partnership built on mutual trust and respect that fosters ongoing enrichment for each other’s lives.

Raising the Bar in Canine Behavior Support

At The Canine Cooperative, we believe that training dogs is about more than just training desirable behaviors—it’s about nurturing trust, confidence, and building a positive relationship between dog’s and their people. Our work is guided by science-based, force-free/fear-free training methods that are not only highly effective, but also deeply respectful of each dog’s emotional and behavioral needs.

Our Responsibility in Behavior Referrals

While we’re proud to be a key part of your dog’s training journey, we know that some behavior challenges may require the expertise of a veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist. That’s why we maintain a strong network of professionals and refer responsibly—only to those who align with our values and commitment to animal welfare.

We strictly avoid outdated, punishment-based approaches that can cause fear, distress, or even injury. These methods not only harm the learning process—they can put both dogs and people at risk. Referrals are made with careful consideration, ensuring they meet the standard of care recognized by veterinary professionals.

Rooted in Science, Not Myths

We proudly follow the guidance of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (ACVB), which rejects a aversive-based models and promotes:

Rewarding desirable behavior
Avoiding punishment, intimidation, or fear tactics
Understanding fear, anxiety, and environmental stressors as common causes of undesirable behavior.

By staying informed with the latest research and best practices, we ensure your dog receives the compassionate, evidence-based support they deserve.
